The Urban Beat: January 25, 2011

.) The Illinois Supreme Court appears to have a little more common sense than their appellate courts do.  Today they stayed the lower courts decision allowing Rahm Emanuel's name to appear on the ballot.

.) Money Matters!  A recent study has determined that as wealth in a family increases, the choices of adults and the child's environment play a much smaller role in determining the mental ability of their children.  The converse is also true, the poorer a family, the choices of the adults and the child's environment play a much larger role.  With many black families growing up in poorer neighborhoods, this isn't very new news.  However, it does emphasize the point that we all must do a better job of parenting.

.) Adding to the "birthers" plight, Hawaii's State State Attorney General has told the governor Hawaii that privacy laws bar him from disclosing an individual's birth documentation without the person's consent.  This means that Governor Neil Abercrombie will not be able to obtain Obama's birth certificate to quite the extreme right.

.) In a strange, but not shocking move, The Tea Party - lead by Michele Bachmann- will issue their OWN rebuttal to President Obama's State of the Union Address.  This move further signifies the growing splinter between the GOP and the Tea Party.  Many GOPers are not happy with this move as it could cause confusion as to what the conservative agenda and perspective is.  I don't expect the Tea Party to back down anytime soon.  If the GOP wants to remain relevant, they may need to nip this in the bud.

.) The 83rd Academy Awards have released their list of nominees.  Included are: For Best Picture - "Black Swan" "The Fighter" "Inception" "The Kids Are All Right" "The King’s Speech" "127 Hours" "The Social Network" "Toy Story 3" "True Grit" "Winter’s Bone"

.) The Super Bowl is set!   On February 6, 2011, the Packers of Green Bay will take on the Steelers of Pittsburgh!  Green Bay stamped their ticket by beating the Chicago Bears IN Chicago by a score of 21-14.  Pittsburgh earned their way by beating the New York Jets 24-19.  I don't have a preference who wins this game, I just want it to be GREAT (plus I look forward to the commercials).  Sadly, this is the last football game of the season.... what to do....  COME ON MARCH MADNESS!!!  Who's interested in an Urban Politico March Madness Challenge???!!!
