Meet Wayne Powell of Virginia's 7th Congressional District

Wayne Powell for Congress
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has a challenger, and his name is Wayne Powell. Get to know him...

***Hat Tip to Mr. Powell's site for giving The Urban Politico a shout out.***

Right now Congress is dysfunctional and nothing is getting done. We've watched both the House of Representatives and the Senate pass bill after bill knowing that it will die in the other body.  There is more finger pointing than actually doing something to rectify the current situation we are in.  The candidates for office are more partisan and it appears to be getting worse, not better.  There is no bi-partisanship. We need to turn this ship around. "We the People" have an opportunity to do so on November 6th.

Virginia has been the subject of political discussion for quite some time. Virginia went blue in 2008 for President Obama. It was a swing state then and is now. There are quite a few crucial races taking place in the Dogwood State and I would like us all to pay close attention - particularly to Virginia's 7th Congressional District.

Currently represented by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the 7th district is home to about 757,917 residents and is comprised of Henrico, Montpelier, Rappahannock, Page, Culpeper, and portions of Chesterfield Counties.

Eric Cantor has held the 7th District Congressional seat since 2000 and has consistently won reelection averaging over 60% of the vote against his challengers. The 7th district went 53% for John McCain in 2008 and 61% for George W. Bush in 2004. This is a red district.  A democrat has not held the congressional seat since 1971. Could Wayne Powell defeat Majority Leader Cantor and pull off a major upset?

Meet Wayne Powell of Virginia's 7th Congressional District:

Wayne Powell is a retired Army Colonel, a small business owner, and a community lawyer.
Wayne Powell was born and raised in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.
As owner and proprietor of the Powell & Parrish law firm, Wayne represents working people who need help making ends meet.
Wayne Powell served in the U.S. Army for 30 years, 5 years of active duty and 25 years in the Active Reserves. He was called back into active duty after September 11, 2001 to command a specialized Army intelligence unit. Wayne was highly decorated during his military career and awarded the Legion of Merit when he retired as a full Colonel in 2002.
Wayne was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Richmond in 1972, and received a Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1973. After 4 years of full time military service, Wayne Powell attended the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond and graduated in 1980.
Wayne served as Staff Clerk to the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, was appointed Assistant Attorney General by then Attorney General Gerald Baliles, and served as Deputy Commissioner of the Virginia Worker’s Compensation Commission for six years. He entered private practice in 1991, and founded his present firm of Powell & Parrish in 1999.
Wayne has always stepped up to lead. A product of the Richmond public schools, he served for two terms as chair of the Lay Advisory Committee to the Henrico County School Board where his children were educated.
With a lifetime of service to his country and community, Wayne is uniquely qualified to take Eric Cantor to task for selling out the people of the 7th District. Wayne believes that our elected representatives should be partners, rather than obstacles, to the success of our communities. Wayne wants to represent the working men and women who too often feel neglected by a political system in which big corporations and partisan agendas hold undue influence.
Wayne and his wife Katherine live in Chesterfield County. He is the proud father Sean, a Major in the Army currently serving in Afghanistan, and Michelle, a legal professional, and the proud grandfather of five.
Here is Wayne on the The Ed Shultz Show

This afternoon I will have the opportunity to interview Wayne. Be sure to tune into "That's What's UP" - The Urban Politico Radio show this Sunday at 5pm (Eastern) for our full interview with Wayne. He will share his vision and plans for Virginia's 7th Congressional District, as well as his pursuit to move our country forward as a U.S. Congressman.
