Happy Independence Day from The Urban Politico!!!

236 years ago, a group of well educated slave owners living on the east coast of the United States decided that they had had just about enough of their ruler King George III of England.  So they formed their own Congress among the 13 British colonies in America (Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia) and voted on July 2, 1776 to break away from the Kingdom of Britain.  2 days later, on July 4, 1776, they made this "Declaration of Independence" to the world, stating, among other things:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
13 years and 1 American Revolutionary War later, these same group of men formed our U.S. Constitution in 1789 and the rest, as they say, is history.  So while you're out enjoying the fireworks today just remember, if the United States hadn't declared Independence from England all those many years ago, you could be looking at a city, state, federal AND a British tax all coming out of your paycheck today! That's something worth celebrating right?
