Sad, disappointed and pissed off is how I feel right now. Once again, at the hands of men and a political party who has a deep seeded hatred for women, the health of women across the nation is once again in jeopardy. Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced Tuesday that they were ending their partnership with Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a partnership that is focused on saving the lives of millions of women from breast cancer. Based on newly created by laws for the operation of the foundation, SGK is prohibited from granting funds to organizations who are subject to any local, state or federal investigations. Planned Parenthood Federation of America has once again fallen victim to the shenanigans of the Republican Party and is currently under investigation by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which is chaired by none other than Mr. Investigations himself, Darrell Issa,US. Representative (CA 49). According to Heartbeat International, a special congressional committee was formed under Chairman Issa's watch to investigate how federal tax dollars are spent throughout the entire organization. As you've already concluded, this investigation is a witch-hunt and in my opinion a sorry ass attempt to tie federal funds to the abortion services provided by Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Through this special congressional committee the lead was taken by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) and an inquiry was launched.
Last June, I highlighted this attack on the health of women across the country, by examining the well orchestrated crusade of the Republican Party against PPFA - The War on Planned Parenthood. I asked a fair question then and I am asking again - why does the GOP hate women? A few people said I shouldn't unfairly label them as a group of people who hate women, but I can't see it any other way. We had Senator Kyle stand before the United States Senate and tell a bold face lie, about Planned Parenthood and its abortion services provided, we saw actual legislation proposed to defund the entire organization and we've seen several members of congress rally against portions of the Affordable Health Care Act, that help women. Knowing all of this and being the ultimate champion for the health of women across the world, for the life of me I can't understand why Susan G. Komen for the Cure would buy into this bullshit and make such a stunning and negative decision.
Let's go ahead and get to the bottom of this pretend issue that has warranted an investigation - Planned Parenthood Federation of American does NOT use federal funds to subsidize the abortion services it provides.
Note to THE REPUBLICAN PARTY- CUT IT OUT! STOP WASTING TIME AND RESOURCES ON THIS NON ISSUE.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a leader in fundraising for breast cancer research and famous worldwide for its iconic pink ribbon, said Tuesday that it was halting all partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates because of recently adopted criteria that forbid it from funding any organization under government investigation.
In September, Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) launched an inquiry to determine whether Planned Parenthood uses public money to fund abortions. Planned Parenthood receives federal money but cannot use it to provide abortions.
Komen has a long history of providing funding to various Planned Parenthood affiliates for such services as manual breast exams and referrals for mammograms and biopsies to check suspicious lumps for cancer. Although that money is not used for abortions, the Komen Foundation may have yielded to demands from antiabortion groups to sever its ties to Planned Parenthood.
"We had the sense this was coming and that they were under pressure," said Sue Dunlap, chief executive of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. "I find this really disappointing. I think when women's health is more of a political conversation than a conversation about healthcare and taking care of people, then we've gone too far."
Officials for Planned Parenthood Federation of America said they learned of Komen's new stance on funding late last year and asked the Komen board of directors for a meeting to resolve any issues or questions related to funding. The meeting did not take place, said Cecile Richards, the federation's president.
Planned Parenthood Federation of American received about $680,000 in funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure last year. The funding allowed the organization to create special task forces that provided outreach to certain communities of women, who lacked the knowledge and access to breast examinations. One specific outreach sent Planned Parenthood to nail and hair salons, where Vietmanese women congregated to give them breast exams, education on breast cancer and prevention, and referrals to visit a Planned Parenthood clinic for additional services and care. The root to solving the breast cancer crisis in women is preventative care and knowing early if there is a lump or something out of the normal.
This is a serious situation and shouldn't be taken lightly. Here are some interesting statistic about breast cancer, so you understand what a piss poor decision Susan G. Komen for the Cure has just made.
U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics:
- About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
- In 2011, an estimated 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 57,650 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
- About 2,140 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in men in 2011. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.
- In 2011, there were more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the US.
2.6 million survivors - preventive care and early diagnoses certainly played a role in this and SGK has just given the middle finger to all these survivors, and the survivors who would have followed suit.
I am outraged by this and you should be too! This is an attack on women and a kick in the back to poor women. This was not some random decision to strengthen both organizations or some attempt to increase access and services. This was a politically motivated and calculated decision. Why wouldn't the board of directors meet with Planned Parenthood to discuss this in the early stages? I know why, because they dont' care and thought we would all be stupid enough to stand by and watch them jeopardize the health of women across the nation. I won't stand for this and you shouldn't either. This decision is detrimental to women and men across the nation who depend on Planned Parenthood for breast cancer examinations and education.
Do you agree with SGK's decision to pull funding from PPFA?
Was this a politically motivated decision on SGK's part?
Should PPFA be under congressional investigation?
Will the attack on women by the GOP come to an end anytime soon?
Why does the GOP hate women so much? if they don't hate women, how do you explain their intense effort?
