The Supreme Court of the United States (hey remember those guys?) reconvened this week and heard it's first case of the new term: Maryland v. Shatzer, 08-680. The case is about police interrogation of criminal suspects outside the presence of their lawyer. People lined up to see the new court, complete with its third ever female member, the wise latina that conservatives love to hate, Sonia Sotomayor. Sotomayor was very active during the oral argument of the case and asked several questions to both sides.
The Supreme Court will also hear some other controversial issues during this session, including gun rights (NRA v. Chicago), separation of church and state (Salazar v Frank Buono), whether videos of dog fights are afforded free speech protection (US v. Stevens), and lifetime prison sentences for juveniles (Sullivan v. Florida).
Good luck with all that!
